Mibu no Tadamine

Is it just from saying (2) / "spring has come" (1) / That Holy Yoshino / Mountain, even, is wrapped in haze / how it looks this morning?

Held on 4/28/905. The rounds were mostly seasonal with a few love poems. A total of 40 poems were matched, 9 of which ended up in the SIS. Tadamine's poem was matched against SIS 8 by Mitsune; they tied.
や...らん
This grammatical structure guesses at the reason for some observation

In the spring field / the pheasant searching out food / its cries for its mate / make known to people (5) / its own dwelling place (4).

  • (Teika's note)

The cry of the pheasant is poetically interpreted here as the bird crying out longing for its mate. 「
る here is a passive, an alternate for らる.「しられつつといふ事也」(能因歌枕, 僻案抄). The つつ indicates repeated activity.

In the setting of the SIS, this poem focuses on the scene of a field with a crying bird. It is a slight variant of a MYS original that also is classified as a spring poem. However, it may also have a hidden love meaning as well. Some commentaries suggest a secondary meaning of destroying one's own body for love, possibly due to the 人 being interpreted as a hunter that will find the bird due to its cries.

This poem was favored by Kinto and included in several of his collections of good poetry, but not in the Shuisho itself. Teika also included it in his late Teika hachidaisho collection of good poetry.

There are several other poems that are quite close in meaning to this poem or are perhaps using this poem as a 本歌:

1178 is perhaps a variant of this poem rewritten to eliminate some of the Nara-period language:
