Typeset sources are given for each entry after the reading in romaji. The following abbreviations are used:

  • 新編国歌大観 volumes are referred to by roman numerals, with the following arabic number representing the number within the volume. So V.230 means the 230th collection in the fifth volume.
  • NKT - 日本歌学大系, 10 volumes, plus 10 別巻 volumes (referred to as B1, B2, etc.)
  • SZS - 新編日本古典文学全集
  • TK - 日本古典文学大系
  • STK - 新日古典本文学大系
  • WBT - 和歌文学大系

古今和歌六帖

こきんわかろくじょう (II.4, WBT 45-46)

A large collection of poems divided into 517 categories. Roughly a quarter of the poems are from the Man'yoshu, and many others appear in the first three Imperial collections (especially the KKS and GSS). It was perhaps compiled in the latter half of the 10th century, but the compiler or compilers are unknown. 4494 poems.

新撰万葉集

しんせんまんようしゅう (II.2)

Said to have been compiled in 893 by Sugawara no Michizane 菅原道真, it is also called 菅家万葉 or similar names. The collection contains Chinese poems as well as Japanese, and seems to have drawn heavily from poetry competitions of the time. 555 poems (including Chinese verse).

新撰和歌

しんせんわか (II.3)

Ki no Tsurayuki assembled this collection of poems taken primarily from the KKS, with a preface in Chinese. 260 poems.

万葉集

まんようしゅう (II.1) A large collection of Japanese poetry that reached its final form sometime in the 8th century. Most sources number these poems according to the original version of the Kokka taikan; the Shimpen kokka taikan includes Chinese poetry and prose in its count. 4516 poems in the old KT, 4440 in the SKT.

和漢朗詠集

わかんろうえいしゅう (II.6)

A collection of Japanese poetry and Chinese verse (by both Japanese and Chinese poets), assembled by Fujiwara no Kinto around 1013. It became not only an important collection for learning poetry, but also for practicing calligraphy. 804 poems (including Chinese verse) separated into topics.

The poetry collection of the monk Jien 慈円 (1155-1225). 5803 poems.

敏行集

としゆきしゅう (III.8)

The poetry collection of Fujiwara no Toshiyuki (?-901 or 907). It seems to have been compiled from the KKS and GSS, and survives now only as part of the 三十六人集. 24 poems.

歌合 (Poetry competitions)

寛平御時中宮歌合

かんぴょうおほんときちゅうぐうのうたあはせ (V.3)

A 17-round poetry competition that survives only in one very late manuscript. According to the manuscript, the 中宮 who served as the judge was Empress Hanshi 班子女王 (833-900), the mother of Emperor Uda. Only the judgments are recorded, no comments. 34 poems.

おうぎしょう (V.294, NKT 1)

A poetic manual and commentary by Fujiwara no Kiyosuke 藤原清輔, written in the mid 12th century.

綺語抄

きごしょう (V.292, NKT B1)

A poetic treatise which is mostly a collection of poems arranged by key word; some of the poems or words have annotation. Written by Fujiwara no Nakazane in the early 12th century.

A short treatise of uncertain authorship and date.

A dictionary written in the late 12th century by Kensho. It has 257 poetic words, with previous theories and Kensho's own theories.

A collection of poems divided into ten styles, drawn from the first eight poetic collections. Although it is under Teika's name, it may be the work of a later poet in the schools of Teika's descendants.
