しのびたりける人にものがたり物語はべりけるを、人のさは騒(さわ)がしくはべりければ、まかりかへりてつかはしける

つらゆき

暁と 何かいひけむ わかるれば 夜ゐもいとこそ わびしかりけれ

Translation

He was chatting with someone he met in secret, and people were making a commotion, so he returned home and sent this

Why do they talk about the dawn? When we have parted it is the evening when I suffer.

Notes

ものがたりし
Although sometimes this can be a euphemism for sex, here it is probably intended to be literal "chatting", although chatting that will lead to a sexual encounter. But Tsurayuki has to leave before they can actually do anything more.
人さはがしく
A possible interpretation is that the woman is in palace service, a place that has little privacy for secret love encounters of this type.
暁と
あかつき(諸本). People generally say that the dawn when they have to part is the sad time. With the alternate reading of を, it may recall criticism of the dawn found in poems like KKS 625 (新抄).
夜ゐ
This seems to be Teika's preferred spelling of the word; the normal "historical" spelling is よひ. This refers to the first part of the night.

Analysis

Tsurayuki's intent here is to build off the common "parting" poetry where the man laments the hated dawn that forces him to separate from his lover. This time he has had to return as soon as the sun set, and this becomes the part of the night he hates.

Possibly the poem was influenced by KKS 625:

有明のつれなく見えし別より暁ばかりうき物はなし
Nothing is as sorrowful as the ruthless dawn, moon still in the sky, after you've parted from your love.
