からうしてあひしりて侍けるひとにつゝむことありて、あひがたく侍ければ
源宗于朝臣
あづま地の さやの中山 中／＼に あひ見てのちぞ わびしかりける
Translation
There was a person he met after great effort, and there was something to be cautious about, and it became hard to meet
On Naka Mountain in Saya we meet so casually -- rather, it is after we meet that I suffer the most.

- あひがたく] 又あひがたく (行・中・貞・堀・雲・坊・承・正・正版・八・増*・標*・新・旧大観・評・全), 又えあはず（荒）,又もえあはず（片）、又のひがたく（胡）. Given the overwhelming manuscript support for this reading, even in Teika's own texts, it may seem that its omission in the base text is a mistake. However, in the base text Teika writes 又 in red ink indicating the reading was in the Fujiwara no Yukinari manuscript, suggesting that the omission was intentional, for whatever reason. Kifune is the only modern editor to emend the text, perhaps because the addition of 又 may be more specific but does not really alter the meaning (Kifune does not give this emendation in his 校訂付記 at the end of the book).

Notes
- からうして
- This can mean having difficulty, through effort, or eventually. It may come from 辛して. The 日葡辞書 indicates the word was unvoiced, although there seems to be no older evidence than that.
- つつしむことありて
- This indicates that there is some issue with them meeting, which is not specified -- it could be a rank difference, not living close to each other, or some other social or political barrier.
- さやの中山
- A mountain in Totomi. Here it serves as a preface to lead into 中々に.「遠江也。中々にといはん枕詞也」（八代集抄）The use of this difficult mountain crossing also suggests the difficulty of meeting the woman.

Analysis
The idea behind the poem is that he was suffering from love before they met, and he thought that after they met his suffering would end. But their meeting, though seemingly casual and noncommittal, has now caused an even greater agony for him. This is perhaps because meeting her again will be difficult (新抄).
The first part of this poem seems to be taken from KKS 594:
- あづまぢのさやの中山なかなかになにしか人を思ひそめけむ
- On the eastern road, Saya no Nakayama, why did I start casually loving her?
And the second part is close to a poem found in the Akahito Collection:
- 春霞山にたなびきかくす妹を逢ひ見て後ぞ恋しかりける
SIS 710 is another similar poem:
- あひみての後の心にくらぶれば昔は物をおもはざりけり
The poem's placement at the beginning of the volume may have been intended to build off the love situation in the previous poem to provide a link between the seasonal and love divisions of the collection.
