私撰集 (Private collections)

こきんわかろくじょう 古今和歌六帖 (II.4, WBT 45-46)

A large collection of poems divided into 517 categories. Roughly a quarter of the poems are from the Man'yoshu, and many others appear in the first three Imperial collections (especially the KKS and GSS). It was perhaps compiled in the latter half of the 10th century, but the compiler or compilers are unknown. 4494 poems.

KKS 1(1)

しんせんまんようしゅう 新撰万葉集 (II.2)

Said to have been compiled in 893 by Sugawara no Michizane 菅原道真, it is also called 菅家万葉 or similar names. The collection contains Chinese poems as well as Japanese, and seems to have drawn heavily from poetry competitions of the time. 555 poems (including Chinese verse).

しんせんわか 新撰和歌 (II.3)

Ki no Tsurayuki assembled this collection of poems taken primarily from the KKS, with a preface in Chinese. 260 poems.

まんようしゅう 万葉集 (II.1)

A large collection of Japanese poetry that reached its final form sometime in the 8th century. Most sources number these poems according to the original version of the Kokka taikan; the Shimpen kokka taikan includes Chinese poetry and prose in its count. 4516 poems in the old KT, 4440 in the SKT.

A collection of Japanese poetry and Chinese verse (by both Japanese and Chinese poets), assembled by Fujiwara no Kinto. 804 poems (including Chinese verse).

The poetry collection of the monk Jien 慈円 (1155-1225). 5803 poems.

としゆきしゅう　敏行集 (III.8)

The poetry collection of Fujiwara no Toshiyuki (?-901 or 907). It seems to have been compiled from the KKS and GSS, and survives now only as part of the 三十六人集. 24 poems.

歌合 (Poetry competitions)

寛平御時中宮歌合　かんぴょうおほんときちゅうぐうのうたあはせ　(V.3)

A 17-round poetry competition that survives only in one very late manuscript. According to the manuscript, the 中宮 who served as the judge was Empress Hanshi 班子女王 (833-900), the mother of Emperor Uda. Only the judgments are recorded, no comments. 34 poems.

A collection of 146 poems from 36 poets that were not included in earlier "36 poetic sages" lists, compiled by Fujiwara no Norikane 藤原範兼 (1107-1165).

A large selection from the first eight Imperial collections, apparently by Fujiwara no Teika 藤原定家. 1809 poems.

A dictionary of various poetic terms. Authorship and date uncertain.

おうぎしょう 奥儀抄 (V.294, NKT 1)

A poetic manual and commentary by Fujiwara no Kiyosuke 藤原清輔, written in the mid 12th century.

A collection of poems divided into ten styles, drawn from the first eight poetic collections. Although it is under Teika's name, it may be the work of a later poet in the schools of Teika's descendants.

A 13th-century poetic treatise by Emperor Juntoku 順徳院.

A work of poetic criticism by Fujiwara no Norikane 藤原範兼, written around 1145.

A large collection of 10654 poems arranged by topic, drawn from Imperial collections as well as famous private collections, poetry competitions, and other sources. Compiled in the mid-Muromachi period by an unknown person.
