Notes

おばすての山
A mountain in Shinano province associated with legends of a man abandoning his mother there. Kigin cited the locus classicus KKS poem (878), although 加藤 questioned Norinaga as to whether this was actually referencing the poem. Norinaga seemed to think it was, and later commenters agree, although the degree of connection is open to question.

Analysis

「歌の心は女のつれなきに慰めかねて、帰し空も覚えざりしとなり」(八代集抄)Nakayama tentatively agrees with this but then offers a reading of his own attributed to an unknown person -- the "abandonment" is the man abandoning the woman as he leaves for the morning. Kifune agrees with this.
