源うかぶ

こひしさは　ねぬになぐさむ　ともなきに　あやしくあはぬ　めをも見る哉

Translation

My longing / is not something that can be cured by not sleeping (2-3) / but strangely, our eyes do not meet. (4-5).

Notes

ねぬ

This suggests actual sleep, as well as "sleeping" with a lover at night.

あはぬめ

This plays on "eyelids not meeting" but also "not meeting the person". 「ねぬには目のあはぬ事を人に不逢にそへて也」（八代集抄）「めは、うきめ、からき目などの「め」に同じ」（新抄）

Analysis

This poem probably plays on the idea of meeting your lover in dreams -- if the poet cannot sleep, he cannot soothe his feelings of longing. But even waking they don't meet either.

「恋しさのあまり、眼がさえて、寝ようにも、寝られないからである。知巧の歌」（全釈）「現のごとく夢をみるなり」（標注）
