He had borrowed a mirror from a woman he was seeing, and returned it.
Poet unknown
I relied on it thinking that just maybe I would see you even as an image, but it was a worthless mirror that only increased my longing (so I am returning it).
Textual notes
Norinaga commented on this reading, saying that the め version was wrong.
Notes
- A woman he had relations with.
- The もや indicates "just maybe" (ひょっとして)
- A play on 恋を増す and ます鏡, originally meaning "clear mirror" but later just a poetic word for mirror.
Analysis
The man borrowed the mirror hoping he would see her face in it (新抄). Perhaps they are both serving in the palace.「戯れのあいさつ。深刻な意味では、むろんない」(全釈)The man is accusing the woman of not being faithful(和歌大系).
