Text

をおとこの、物などいひつかはしける女のゐなかの家にまかりて、たゝきけれども、きゝつけずやありけん、かどもあけずなりにければ、田のほとりにかへるのなきけるをきゝて

A man who had been interacting with a woman visited her house in the countryside and knocked at her gate, but perhaps because she didn't hear, the door was not opened, and he heard a frog croak in the nearby field.

葦引の 山田のそほづ うちわびて ひとりかへるの ねをぞなきぬる

A mountain scarecrow is knocking, and in sorrow returns home alone, as the frogs are croaking.

Notes

そほづ
A scarecrow that runs on water power, playing on the man knocking (八代集抄) - Nakayama disagrees with this although wrote quite a bit wondering if there was some validity to it. See poem 268.
かへる
帰る and 蛙. Used in association with the fields.

Analysis

The man compares himself to the lonely scarecrow. Perhaps he hears frogs croaking in the field. 鑑賞 praises the use of the unusual "plain" words そほづ and かへる, noting that in the GSS these kind of poems don't appear in a separate haikai section.
