Text
身よりあまれる人を思かけてつかはしける
He thought of a woman higher ranking than him, and sent this.
Ki no Tomonori
玉もかる あまにはあらねど わたつみの そこゐもしらず 入る心かな
I am not a fisherman who collects jewelled seaweed, but my heart has entered the wide sea whose depths are unknown.

Analysis
The metaphor of the poet as an あま connects with the prose context of the woman being higher ranking. Tomonori, who never attained a high rank, is not one of those あま who would collect 玉藻 ("jewelled" weed, thus the high-ranking woman), but he still finds himself drawn to her, with a love as deep as the unknown sea. Possibly this was sent along with some kind of sea-related object(和歌大系).
