Notes
- 関
- This is the 逢坂の関, which was known for having 清水. See SIS 170「逢坂の関の清水にかげ見えて今やひくらん望月の駒」
- あはづのもりの
- This is a place in Omi, but also leads into 逢はず in the next line. Nakayama pointed out that it is only the あは part that links since the づ and ず are not the same.
- かげ
- The image (memory) of the woman.
Analysis
The poet's lover is presumably going to Omi for some kind of provincial appointment, separating the two. The poet may have no idea when (or if) the man is ever going to return. There was a practice of accompanying people to the Osaka Barrier and seeing them off there -- whether the poet actually did this or not is beside the point(全釈), but the idea is used to create the scene, drawing on the "clear water" imagery from the famous Tsurayuki poem quoted above.
