There is no clear reason for the rain imagery -- perhaps it was sent on a rainy day or the couple's last meeting was during a rainstorm. The alternate reading of 雲居はるかに complements the wide, open feeling of あまの原. | |||

(98v) 女につかはしける
Sent to a woman
Lord Toshiyuki
わが恋の かずをかぞへば あまの原 くもりふたがり ふる雨のごと
If I were to count my love, it would be like the rain falling from the sky blocked by clouds.
